Woman Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Stop Assault Dies
The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck during a random assault at a bus stop in Birmingham has passed away, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 9 PM GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
Djeison Rafael, 21, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.
Originally charged of attempted murder but following the victim's passing charges were upgraded to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area on Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who might have observed the accused, who is described as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, dark headwear, trainers and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred outside the Bullring shopping centre, across from the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating efforts continue to determine the motive behind.
Eyewitness Reports
Shalini Doal, employed in the vicinity, recounted the emergency response after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", and said co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"A lot of my colleagues use transit services, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk fundamentally, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came the city quite frequently to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, expressing concern regarding the incident.
"It causes concern about my partner," he said.
"She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked occurred, understandably, it's terrible."
