Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Counters President Trump's Warning to Relocate World Cup Matches from City

Boston's mayor, Michelle Wu, suggested that the city was ready for a face-off with President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup tournament games from Gillette Stadium, located approximately 35 kilometers south-west of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to answer comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "radical left." Trump had warned that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "clean up its act."

Much of it is secured by agreement so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.

She added, "We're in a world where for drama, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and submit or follow along to a hateful agenda."

Mayor Wu further stated, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging what Boston stands for." She finished by stressing her support for the Boston, saying, "Fully committed for Boston."

Trump's Comments and FIFA Role

Earlier this week, Infantino was seen with President Trump at the international summit in Egypt. Infantino has also visited the White House and given World Cup tournament and Club World Cup awards to the president as presents.

On Tuesday, Trump was questioned on unrest in a Boston neighborhood that included a police vehicle being set on fire. He responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Infantino – the president of FIFA, who's phenomenal."

He added, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details

Trump has previously suggested that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about moving games from other host cities, which are part of the 16 locations across the continent.

The US is joint hosts the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is planned to be held from June 11 to July 19 in the coming year.
